Breeding Wagyu takes time, dedication and an understanding of inputs, whether it is genetics or nutrition, give the best outputs for maternal traits, fertility and carcase. How you interpret those variables will have a large impact on your breeding decisions.
In terms of nutrition, less than perfect weather has made choosing the right feed combinations a balancing act to ensure enough protein, energy and roughage to sustain your cattle’s health, increase liveweight or pregnant and lactating cows. NSW DPI Beef Development Officer, Todd Andrews (Day 1, Session 1) will walk you through the calculations of ensuring quality feed and the best way to use a recently developed App, the Drought Feeder Calculator.
In Day 1, Session 2, Applying and Fuelling EBVs, our Speakers AGBU’s Dr Brad Walmsley will go through BreedObject $Indexes and demonstrate the best way to use the data to maximise production systems and decisions. Following on from that SBTS’ Catriona Millen will discuss that carcase data is an integral part of understanding your breeding and feeding decisions – for both small and large herds.
If ever you have wanted to encapsulate some of the more recent data analysis, these two Sessions will no doubt give you food for thought.
